Recommendation Letters for Elizabeth Baker Turnock

In 1970 my grandmother, Elizabeth Turnock, decided to apply to be a tour guide in Washington, D.C. She did get that position and held it for many years. Below are three recommendation letters for her. Reviewing this letters it occured to me that recommendation letters are a great memorial to a person. You get a glimpse of their interests as well as their positive qualities. The first two letters are from people Grandma played bridge with. The last one is from the pastor of her church. Any present day comments or additions are recorded in brackets [].

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Re: Mrs. James H. (Elizabeth) Turnock, Jr.
3623 Gleneagles Drive
Silver Spring, Maryland

This letter is to advise that it has been the privilege of Mrs. Bittinger and me to know Mrs. Turnock for over ten years. My recollection is that she has been in this area considerably longer than that, having come to metropolitan Washington as one from a fine family in North Carolina.

Mrs. Turnock's husband is a Ph. D. in the scientific field and more recently has been in some segment of the space program. He and Elizabeth have one adult daughter. The Turnocks are members of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, where my family has been members for quite a long time. We have been in their home and they have visited ours over the years.

In the past Elizabeth has been an active volunteer in the American Red Cross, as well as in other civic organizations. She is a fine, intelligent, conscientious, hard worker and I am confident she would be an asset to your organization.

Sincerely,
Donald S. Bittinger
[Chairman of the Board, Washington Gas Light Company]

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

My wife, Nancy Jackson Webb, and I have known Dr. and Mrs. James Turnock, 3623 Gleneagles Drive, Silver Spring, Maryland, for many years. Dr. Turnock has been involved most significantly in the Apollo program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during much of the period my brother, James E. Webb, was Administrator, and made a great contribution toward the ultimate successful flights.

It is my understanding that Mrs. Turnock has applied for a position that would involve acting as escort or guide to individuals in the Washington, D.C. area from time to time. It is my opinion that Mrs. Turnock would be a great asset to any organization serving the general public, at any level, as she is a most gracious, considerate, personable, intelligent and attractive person. Mrs. Turnock is completely reliable, capable and trustworthy, and I give her my highest endorsement for any position dealing with the public or otherwise.

To Whom It May Concern:

It is a great pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Mrs. James Turnock who is applying for the position of tour guide in Washington.

Mrs. Turnock is a member in good and regular standing of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and has been part of our membership for 10 years, - since February 7, 1960.

At the present time the Turnocks are serving as one of twenty-five key couples in our Area Leadership program. They are valuable and able members of the church.

Having served as pastor of Chevy Chase Church for only a few months I do not know all of our members intimately, however, I have no hesitancy in recommending Mrs. Turnock without reservation. I am sure that you will find her reliable, sober and thoroughly dependable.

Yours very truly,
John G. Marvin
