In my junior year of high school ('91-'92) I secretly called Brian Nenninger on the phone. "Shh!" I said listening to Carolyn and Clint arguing on the porch right outside my room, "I think Carolyn and Clint are breaking up!!!" Boy, was I WRONG!!!

In my sophomore year in high school I started hanging out with Clint. He was soooo cool. I had a huge crush on him at first, then we became friends & I forgot about the crush. Anyway, we started playing cards one day (I forget what game we were playing but I think I kicked Clint's ass.) The game turned into 52-pick up--the it progressed into keep-away. Then we relaxed for a moment & Clint said something along the lines of if an alien came to Earth, it would think Earthlings are weird because of the games they played. And I laughed & Clint leaned over & I turned my head & said, "What are you doing?!?" What I meant to say was- "How in the world did you fall down like that?!?" Because I really did think he had fallen. So Clint jumped up & quickly said "Oh, it's time for you to go home!" so he drove me home & I started thinking about it & I thought, "Hmm... he did something to my cheek with his lips...He tried to kiss me!" I asked him about it two days later because I didn't see him the next day. It was so funny.

Carolyn and Clint are two of those rare people that the world could disintegrate around their feet, everyone they know could disappear and as long as they are together with each other they will be fine.

When Carolyn and I were in college together, we'd go out to Hawaii Kai on Tuesdays and Thursdays dancing. I remember one time, Clint was drunk & his eyelids were sagging so his eyes weren't fully open-- and his dark eyes were staring at Carolyn dancing. He looked so happy. Just admiring her brought him that happiness (well and some shots too!)
On a similiar note, New Years 1999 right before midnight, Clint was wandering around drunk chanting, "Must Find Carolyn Before Midnight." There are a lot of people I know who as a side effect of drunkeness suddenly forget about their significant others. However, for Clint, Carolyn is still foremost in his mind.

On our 6 yr anniversary, I was in college, but Clint was in Northern VA. I had a bunch of classes that day, but when I got home, Dave Nelson was there acting all weird. Then I noticed there was a bouquet of flowers. I was like "Who got flowers" Dave told me they were mine. So I read the card & they were from Clint! Clint isn't much of a flower person, so they are really special when he gets me some. I still have the card somewhere & that clear devil pitchfork thing that holds the card. I also still have the basket. I saved the dried flowers for as long as they lasted, but only one is left.
On another flower note, a few weeks ago, Clint bought me 6 purple-red roses. They were such a pretty color. I still have them on our kitchen table even though they are all dead. We got in a fight for some dumb reason & after a while, Clint came over & apologized, & pulled one of the roses from behind his back. He is so sweet!

When Carolyn & Clint were in high school they would have fights and Carolyn would slam down the phone and storm around the house an hour or two, then the phone would ring or I would hear Carolyn on the phone apologizing. They never once said come get your stuff, I want mine back. I used to tell Becky that she and Vic and Lowell and I taught them how to sucessfully fight. Storm- get over it and make up.

Here is a continuation of Carolyn's 6 year anniversary story. My friend, Jodi Cromer Vandervort was working at a florist. Of all the florists in Blacksburg, Clint ordered from Jodi's. Jodi was the one who filled out the card. As she was writing "Carolyn," she thought, "I know a Carolyn" Then she got to the bottom and it said, "Love Clint" and Jodi was stunned and touched- she looked at the address and sure enough it was my sister!
Later I was looking at the web site Clint ordered the flowers from & I was reading the suggested captions for a card. I mocked one caption to Clint:
"We are like a pair of angels with one wing a piece. We can only fly if we hold on to each other."
Clint didn't find the caption as humourous. In fact he wrote back, "That's what I was originally going to put on the card! I like that!"
Doh!

That angel caption reminds me of Uncle Timmy's Wedding where the priest droned on & on about this man & woman had a question mark over each of their heads & they were all confused about that question mark until they joined them together and they made a heart.
...I think me & Clint are very successful because we have open channels of communication. We don't hide things from each other & we don't sugarcoat problems. We deal with them.
Nobody else is writing, so I'll take another turn. Way back when I had a crush on Clint, I didn't realize I had a crush on him until I was at Tanya's birthday party, which was on Dec. 6. I was hanging out w/all these girls when suddenly someone (I think it was Amy Willis) said, "Who is Clint?" and I said, "Oh he's a friend of mine." and they said, "You've been talking about him all night! Do you have a crush on him?" and I said "No". They asked, "Who is your boyfriend?" and I said "Dave" They exclaimed, "You haven't said ONE WORD about him ALL NIGHT!" and that made me realize that I had a crush on Clint. But we were just friends for months after that, & I never thought about the crush.
