Vicky and Tony on Snowy Road January 18, 2003 A great deal of our driving was on 714, which was covered with snow. This is Vicky and Tony with the snowy road behind them before they commenced the hike down to the Cascades.
Icy Cascades From a Distance January 18, 2003 This is the Cascades. As you can see, most of the falls is frozen. To get an idea of the size of the falls look closely at the left side-- there are tiny little people there!

Icicles Above Upper Observation Deck January 18, 2003 The upper observation deck was closed. The previous week, some of those huge icicles fell. They do look pretty deadly.
Fallen Icicle January 18, 2003 It wasn't an usual site to see the rocks on the side of the trail covered with icicles. This picture shows a HUGE icicle that had fallen. To give you pespective about the size, it looked about the size of a footstool or low bench.
Frozen Cascades January 18, 2003 This is a closeup of the frozen Cascades. Only a small section of the water in the middle is actually moving.

Ice Stream January 18, 2003 The ice at the bottom of the Cascades was so thick, that the water coming down the falls carved its own little stream in the ice-- like the Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon. More icicles are in the background.
Icicles January 18, 2003 Icicles climbing down the rocks at the Cascades. The stream carving through the ice is also pictured.
Whiskercicles January 18, 2003 Not even half way into our hike, Jimmie got ice deposits on his whiskers. Tony's hand is also pictured.
Lookout from Butt Mountain January 18, 2003 This is the view from Butt Mountain. There was an old lookout tower there, but the lowest level of stairs had been removed so the public wouldn't use it.
"Mini-Cascades" January 18, 2003 En route to the Cascades we were misled by the running water sounds from these falls. It was a welcome detour. "Hibernating" rhododendron is in the left.

Vicky, Jimmie and Henry at Butt Mountain Overlook January 18, 2003 Vicky, Jimmie and Henry at Butt Mountain Overlook. If you look closely, you can see one of Jimmie's back paws are wrapped up. He had a cut on his foot that was sensitive to cold. Kevin Ledman did a marvelous job wrapping the foot up before the hike and it never gave Jimmie problems.

Vicky, Jimmie and Henry under Rhododendrum Tunnel January 18, 2003 Vicky, Jimmie and Henry under a natural tunnel made of "hibernating" rhododendrum. This path led the hikers to a minature version of the Cascades. The dogs are keeping warm with their sweaters, while Vicky sports a handmade chenille hat and a handmade fleece scarf. And her QualTrax jacket, of course!

Cascades Bottom January 18, 2003 This is the very bottom of the Cascades where the cold water hits a small pool surrounded by thick ice.
